How do you normally heat your home? We have natural gas. My heating bill runs about $1600 a year. We have a 4000 or so square foot home, not including the basement, which is also finished and is another 1500 square feet, but is heated by electric. You have to be low income to get help paying your utilities.
That would be a millionaire's mansion in the UK and would cost a King's ransom to heat . UK houses are small, overpriced and cost a King's ransom to heat :mad:
Most houses use gas for heat and hot water. In many rural areas there is no mains gas, so many people use LPG, oil or wood / coal for heating and electric for cooking. My house is a modest 1400 sq. ft. which is a fairly normal size for the UK. I use oil (Kerosene) for heating and electric for cooking. I can double the value of the house by filling the oil tank.

I too, love thinking about and imagining sloths,
like was mentioned;
but I probably would not opt to have one for a comfort animal, within the small apartment! :oops::giggle::LOL:

@Pepper
It is wonderful to picture you doing your activities, the past couple of days, and so sweet what your dear grandson said!:)
Is there an update to share about how your dil is doing?

..and that's barely a joke. Just to make it clear to non Brits, that doesn't mean the house is cheap.. instead it reflects just how expensive Oil is...

Attended to the leaking drip irrigation line. Pulled some weeds. I had left Kleenex, paper towels in the truck last night, and took them out and put them away. Now, I'm here on the computer posting some stuff, working on the taxes, and working on some stuff for Daughters of the American Revolution...and well, I just may play a little solitaire...I hope your day is going nicely. Spring is trying its hardest to come to the desert, so enjoying the gorgeous sunshine!

Gee, I never knew that. Honestly, I didn't. I hope I haven't come across as being some big shot, rich American. There are a lot of homes here in the U.S. that are the size of mine and much larger. I didn't mean to offend anyone and wasn't meaning to show off. I just didn't realize what I had compared to what's available in Scotland, so I apologize if I have offended anyone. I'm glad that I didn't tell everyone that I also had a pool in my backyard. I had a tennis and basketball courts in my yard also, but had them removed right after I bought this property.

Just to be honest with you, don't think living here comes cheap keeping up our homes. Taxes are a killer. I pay over $7000 in taxes a year just in school tax. There is also a county tax and a municipality tax. All together, I am paying about $10,000 in taxes each year. And it won't stop there.

I'm sure no-one took offence at your comment 911.. nor do we think you're a Big shot American.. as my good friend, I know you much better than that... (y)

@911 I think it was casually mentioning the tennis and basketball courts that did it :eek::)

In the middle of storm 'Otto'. Trees down, roads closed, travel disrupted etc... My little lean-to greenhouse has been badly damaged - broken glass all over the place, but otherwise I think we're OK. The house has stood for almost 200 years, so it's not going to be blown away now!
Not sure what to do with the greenhouse. I've got plenty of spare glass and polycarb panes, but I'm not sure whether I'll fix it or remove it. It cost me nothing.
Sorry about your damage @Capt Lightning. I always thought a greenhouse would be so fabulous to have! It would be nice to fix it I think, but if you do, you must be careful.

Greenhouses are very popular in many people's gardens RR... I used to have one myself.. all my neighbours have one.. but I found it tedious whenever we had a storm to have to replace the glass, so I finally decided it wasn't worth it..

I didn't do much of anything today. I took a couple of naps and watched T.V. A couple of hours after my son got home, he told me he'd like us to watch something together. Since he usually doesn't watch T.V., it's my choice. So we watched (I re-watched) the first two episodes of Will Trent (Hulu). It's 11:30 and I spent almost a half an hour trying to choose wet cat food that I think Deja would like, plus meet the requirement of $49 to get $20 off and free shipping on first time orders. I figure this is a good time to try new flavors. I decided to go with Meow Mix this time because several people both on Chewy (tonight's order) and Amazon have complained about badly dented cans in the bulk packs of Friskies. I experienced it too. I had to toss two cans from my last order from Amazon; two more were slightly dented but usable. Amazon reimbursed me for 5 cans. I haven't played Words With Friends yet today, so I will do that and maybe a little more T.V. before I fall asleep.

Absolutely no offence taken. Britain is a small overpopulated country. Land prices are generally high, so small houses are crammed on to small plots at obscenely high prices. Of course it varies over the country, but houses which are 4000+ sq feet are uncommon and expensive to buy and maintain. The average detached house in the UK is just less than 1600 sq ft.

On the one and only time I was in Florida (Boca Raton) I was returning my hire car to Miami airport and I decided to take the coastal route. I was amazed at the variation in housing. At one point, I could clearly see the ocean and decided to take a closer look. I turned down a small street and it looked just like a typical street in any British town or city. It all changed when I walked down to the beach which stretched as far as I coild see. The only other people there were two young ladies wearing what I can describe as "shoe laces". Not something you tend to see on a Scottish beach!

It's morning. Sir effed up the schedule so it looks like I'm off tomorrow. Tomorrow and Monday are inventory days with all hands on deck except New Lady, of course, because working on Sat/Sun is out of the question for her. That would interfere with her "catering" business.

I feel like not mentioning it and just letting it be. That would mean Retired Lady would have to work alone tomorrow, which would be a mean thing to do to her.

Ok. Enough monkey business. Time to get dressed and get my butt in gear. BBL
