Forum member seriously injured

Eventually I had to have Cortisone injections in my back... that was the only thing that worked !

Now I've had the maximum injections they will give because eventually they don't work.. and the result is that it makes the injured site worse...
You're right about cortisone injections working until they don't work anymore. My back is also worse since I maxed out on them. When it came to carpel tunnel, I had one injection in each hand to put off surgery due some things going on with my husband's family. The shots started to wear off in about 9 months or so & I opted to have the surgery.

How di the Carpel surgery go, Lilac?... If and when I recover from these injuries, Carpel tunnel surgery is on the list...

I'd previously been told I needed the injections in my left hand, but I was also told they're very painful, and they wear off after 3 months.. ( according to my source who is my neighbour who has them done regularly).. and it put me off having the injections.. so I'd be interested to know how you got along with the surgery!

The surgery was about 2 years ago & went well. I've recently had some pain again & probably need to go back to the doctor. I do use my hands & wrists working so I'm not really surprised with this. I can say it's not as bad as what I had before surgery, just a nagging feeling right now.

My surgeon sent me for an EMG test before surgery. The doctor who did the test gave me the results right there. He said I had severe carpel tunnel which hadn't heard of before.

I told him after this surgery, I'd have to have my shoulder looked at next. He asked me about it & I told him that at night if I slept on it that I couldn't roll back over off of it or use that arm to push myself back over because of the pain. I ended up using my left arm to move around when it hurt that bad. He said he was pretty certain that was all related to carpel tunnel. About a week or so after the surgery, my shoulder issues started to resolve itself. Just with that alone I was happy with the surgery.

The only thing that really bothered me after surgery was where they placed the tourniquet for the procedure. That bothered me for weeks & they sent me to therapy to help it. Every once in a while that upper arm muscle will give me fits, but it's nothing that I can't live with.

I've heard a few people tell me they wished they never had it done & others that said they were happy with the results. The funny thing is, I've now known of more men than women that have had the surgery. I always thought women were more prone to it, but I guess that isn't the case.

My brother had the Carpel-Tunnel surgery done 2 or 3 years ago. You can count him in the "wish I never had it done" crowd and that included months of P.T. after the surgery. He was supposed to have his other wrist done but after the botched attempt on his first hand/wrist he said; "NO WAY, I'll put up with the discomfort."

By chance, did you brother get a second opinion on what was going on? I hope it works out for him.

When it gets to the point that you drop things, it's time to do something. It was very aggravating to drop a knife or fork when I was eating. I had to concentrate on not dropping my coffee cup. At some point, you have to decide to whether to live with it or fix it. For me, it was to fix it.

The surgeon I had was recommended by my GP. Between several doctors I know, I've been able to find out who is best in doing things & have had good recommendations. I also know that there may be complications with anything you do.

I'm using the same doctor my husband had for 2 knee replacements, a hip & a torn bicep repair for my knee. He's excellent & I liked how he handled everything for my husband. He is no non-sense & straight to the point. Some people don't like that kind of a bedside manner, but I like this when I deal with anyone.

Small steps, babe. Remember...small steps. Don't overdo it.
this is my major problem Jujube.. I do try always in life to run before I can walk..:(.. and like you say too @Teacher Terry ..it's highly frustrating for me......I'm usually such a fast healer.. and this is very slow to me.. it's been 3 weeks, but the nurses keep telling me.. that's a very short time for all these injuries to recover.....

My daughter keeps telling me to stop trying to do things.. but it's hard for me.... but it's even harder, when I do try.. and the pain won't allow it.

I know it's trite, and people keep dismissing it as nothing to be concerned about... but it really bothers me that I can't clean the house. It takes me a long time to just wash up some cups and cutlery... for now I;m using paper plates ..but washing up the pots , slowly and gingerly, with all sorts of protections over my bandages and wounds.. .. but not being able Vac..or wash the floors, or clean the bathrooms, is really getting me down..., unable to bend at all as well due to the horrendous back spasms..

I had a message from my gardener yesterday asking if I was ok..he didn't know about the accident .. and did I want him to come and mow the lawns..

I replied, I'd been in an accident and was not able to do much currently .. but if he wanted to come on friday, he could....

He never replied...so I have no idea if he'll come or not....

I don’t think it’s trite at all. Like you I like to be able to keep up on my daily tasks and keep my house clean. I would be very depressed if I couldn’t do that. I usually heal quickly too, but I broke my wrist nine years ago. It was a really bad break and it took four months to heal. Once it was healed, I could not move it at all and then I needed PT.

Of course, that was the only injury I had so it’s nothing like what you’re experiencing. During that time I did figure out how to do some things with my left hand. My husband was worthless when it came to household tasks so things just weren’t getting done.

I also wasn’t living alone like you are now so I did have him to help with things that I couldn’t do. Now that I live alone, I totally empathize with your situation. Plus, I can’t even imagine all the pain you’re experiencing from all the different injuries. I’ve never had to deal with that, fortunately.

Probably a silly question, but is there any household help available that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, just temporarily and for minimal tasks?

Does the hospital you were taken to provide any social services? Sounds like something that social worker might be able to help with.

Doll stay with the great plan, call Merry Maid and watch em work the house over. Take it in stages, enjoy the time with them.
See, how easy it is to improve stuff. ... :coffee: ...

Just call the Handyman back and remind him you scheduled him for Friday. You been so busy! He should be home now.

Can you hire someone to clean once or twice? It might not cost too much and would probably make you happy, thus helping your recovery.

yes I could, and I have been mulling it over. I don't particualrly want any of the so called '' irina, or Maria's '' who have been spamming the neighborhood app looking to clean houses....to come and clean my house... so the district nurse told me about a company... but I nearly fell off my chair at their prices.. ...so I'm still thinking about it...

No the answer is NO to both tbh... certainly not the hospital. In fact one of the ditrict nurses who comes to the house was horrified that I had no-one.. her exact words were.. '' they've let you go home, with no-one here.. and no-one to help.. and if you died, and laid here for days.. they'd say ''lessons have been learned''....

When I had cleaners and a big house, I didn’t have them do every room. So maybe have them do the downstairs and then upstairs just your bedroom and bathroom. That will save you some money. If you have any rooms downstairs that aren’t used very much you could have them skip those two.
Hmmm..I dunno I think it might just be too stressful for me at the moment... ..altho' I would like someone to clean the bathrooms and kitchen... I have to do some more research on availability of trusted people
