I do not like Aldi's and a few other specialty food stores. I just can't give my money to a German food store although I do realize I am most likely reacting from emotion than reality.
I have to admit I'm not keen on Aldi... On the odd occasion I will shop there but if I do it's only because it's either the closest to where I am...and also if I'm only going to buy a few items..like milk and bread etc.

I prefer Lidl, which is also a German owned store.. they were here long before Aldi, and they have many more stores in Spain, Germany Italy etc... .. altho' Aldi has taken off emormously in the last 10 years opening store after store all up and down the country... Lidl still has more stores... Lidl prior to that had ben a little bit of a small dark scruffy discount store that only few people went to.... so if anything good came out of Aldi's appearance as a grand competitior to the Big 3 Supermarket Chains. Waitrose, Sainsbury & Tesco... .... it was that it shook Lidl into being a much more competitive store, a bigger cleaner, supermarket than it had been previosuly and so it gained many more customers..

so those 2 are the biggest food discount stores in the UK...I prefer lidl because they sell better quality produce and meat... but my nearest one is in the next county, so I only go there occasionally..

Did a little grocery shopping yesterday to round out what I need for company this evening. Then hit Costco for just a few things. Combined I got away spending under $100. A good thing because last week's Costco bill was over $300.

@hollydolly just posted about Aldi. I shop there weekly, but only buy certain items from them. A little produce when it's on sale, and store brand items: whole grain bread, canned beans, preserves, a few kinds crackers, pretzels, fresh almond milk, fresh salsa, unbranded Cheerios, and salad dressings that I thin down with apple cider vinegar,

Flax seeds, baking powder, bulk stevia and a few other things a couple of times a year.

Lidls in the US are strictly east coast. None in California or anywhere near it.

My complaint about Lidl is that the two stores close to us are way too big, and it takes way too long to get through them. Prices seem to be about the same, maybe a little higher than Aldi? DD mentioned the other day that we should give Lidl another chance. We went to each of the two the first week that they were open.

@StarSong Teehee...I can tell you why so far Lidl is in the east. It's because it's closer to Germany;). Give it time, and you'll be seeing them get closer and closer to y'all.

Hey...yanno it's been weeks since I've asked begged for a mentor to "unlock my potential" like in the commercial, and there've been no volunteers. What's up with that? At my age, I can't be waiting around so if you're out there (and don't want me to be a plumber)...

My wife is a fabulous cook and takes great care of me, like preparing organic raw veggies for snacking

But I also have some favorite stuff that I sneak in from time to time, like Salsa with Quinoa; or a tomato soup with dried
onions, lemon juice, eggs or Hamburger meat, and some dried spices like Cayenne peppers, cilantro, basil leaves, and so on.

Pumpernickel bread imported from Germany with margarine and Brie cheese always makes my mouth watery;
and a blueberry shake with fat-free milk and some low-fat Greek yogurt not only taste great but is also very healthy.

I'm surprised that you use margarine and not butter or olive oil. Do you know something I don't?

I just finished cleaning out my spice cabinet. Yes cabinet. I have so many herbs and spices, store bought and home dried.
A woman who worked for McCormick Spice said spices last much longer than we think so I don't throw out until a few years old.
I ended up throwing out many old spices.
I like to save the McCormick jars to reuse and I cleaned the labels off about ten jars to use my own labels.
This started because I dried many herbs this morning and I wanted to get them processed and be rid of a lot of old stuff.
The ones I dried today went on the cleaned off top shelf until I finish off last years.
I have a lot of extracts too. I got rid of one. I really only use vanilla and almond extract. I do like to put brandy extract in sweetened milk as a Brandy Alexander.
Anyway, I feel accomplished.

Oh, @RadishRose , I still intend to try a cardamom pod in my coffee or tea. That is a good way to use those up.

Grr. Got stuck behind Grandma Moses in her GMC Terrapin for a couple of miles, driving half the speed of other traffic and bobbing and weaving in and out of her lane like Mr. Magoo.

How do these people have licenses?

I had a similar thing happen today..the car in front of the car in front of me.. was going at a snails pace. The road is 5 miles through woods.. and 2 way traffic..but narrow and bendy and all down very steep roads..... so the car behind me was keeping his distance because of the front car, and because he slowed down..''white van man behind him''.. took it as an invite to race to overtake him, on the only piece of straight road of about 300 yards , and right up my ARsss...

Where he thought I was going to go I have no idea... but he couldn't get past me..because I had 2 cars going slowly in front of me, with now no way of overtaking because of all the steep downhill bends .... but I could see him chomping at the bit ..to get past... all caused by the Mr /Mrs Magoo... at the front..

I much prefer Lidl to Aldi, especially since it sells more German / European style foods. Aldi is OK for some items, but Lidl generally has better quality produce. Shopping is not so 'traumatic' here. Shops are not too busy most days and parking is free. One thing most shoppers won't encounter is 'Shopping for the boat'. Fishing is one of the main industries and the stores such as Lidl or Tesco supply provisions for the fishing boats. Often we see a couple of the crew going round the store with two shopping trolleys buying provisions for the next voyage. In this case, the store will open a dedicated checkout aisle. I've often wondered how they figure out what they have to buy.

Butter is animal fat, and all animal fat is unhealthy. But fish oil is great.

For cooking, etc., we are using only Olive oil because it's super healthy but it doesn't fit on bread. Prices have shot up because of a drought in Spain. At Sam's Club till recently a 3 Liter bottle was about $12 I think (virgin Olive Oil is a few dollars more) then prices almost double but came down a little bit. The last time I bought a 3 Liter bottle at Sam's it costs $22.

Don't use Olive oil for frying but use Avocado Oil instead. I forgot the reason but can check on Internet if you want.

Margarine is healthy/unhealthy depending on the ingredients. You have to be very careful when buying it.

I am a little bit of a health fanatic. My orthopedic surgeon told me last year that I am at 89 health-wise in the top 10% of guys my age.

I believe I posted the pictures below already earlier. But once more as a reminder of what I believe is healthy (and I am taking about two dozen nutritional supplements.) I am especially keen on anti-oxidants for fighting inflammation in the body that is the root cause of so many health problems. As measured by the C-Reactive Protein Test, my body is almost completely free of inflammation. I also believe that exercise is essential. I am walking daily with my three Boxer dogs 1 1/2 hours, and also use my mini-gym especially for strengthening my arms. BTW, since January 2021, I had already nine COVID shots and never had any COVID symptom. I am also up-to-date with all other shots recommended for my age.

Packleader...a drought in Spain?... errrm.. Spain has a drought every year for about 3 months then it has biblical rains... and this year it surpassed itself, and had more rain in 3 weeks in March since 1893... and most places in Andalucia and the Algarve Portugal caused massive flooding as it has the last few years...

Drought in Spain..my arse.. someone is taking full advantage of you raising these Virgin Olive Oil prices...

Did you know in Spain Virgin Olive Oil is very cheap in the supermarkets ?

Incidentally, just in case you're not aware, a few of your supplements are a month past their exp date ...
