The 2024 Olympics in Paris

I stayed up all night to watch the opening of the Paris Olympics. Loved all of it except for a couple of weird scenes. My sisters were disgusted by the scene of The Last Supper. I must be quite naive as I couldn't see it that way. But let's face it, all those wonderful people that put together such a kaleidoscope of French history. The horseman riding along the Seine River to deliver the Olympic torch. all those happy athletes representing their countries on the ferries. Those parents must have been so proud watching. I've been watching every night and so proud of all the Aussie athletes. I'll be there until the closing ceremony, I'm sure that will be spectacular as well.

Yesterday during the female volleyball event there was rain with lightning nearby, so the games were suspended until storm passed by. They switched to the Island of Tahiti. It appeared they had some really great waves. I tried watching it, but kept dozing off because I was tired from being outside working on my yard due to my usual lawn guy was on vacation.

I have a serious question for those who follow soccer (football) closely. Do the fans and participating countries consider the Olympics as important as The World Cup or even the events that took place earlier this summer ?
 
If one doesn't have cable network coverage stinks. Too much non competition coverage. The coverage is like a magazine article on the events and participants. They need to show more events news round up style. Professional sports networks and shows fill hours of time with actual video and details from individual games all the time.

Then they're wasting time with Snoop and SNL schtik .

How many hours of video get erased because they put together a sweet human interest story, and the athlete doesn't even get past the preliminary stages? Never aired.
 
I'm not one for sport but I do appreciate the incredible diving and swimming, along with gymnastics. The rowing was exciting.

I do however find the power walking and some other sports rather absurd. I do wonder at some of the sports and why they are in the Olympics at all.

I dislike dressage and will not watch it, especially as I saw a video recently of a former female champion whipping a horse to train it.

I can't speak for other countries but here in England and possibly the whole of the UK, I would hazard a guess that the World Cup is more important. Certainly is to me. Team GB aren't competing in the Olympics in Paris anyway, not participated in Olympics since 2012. This is down to sporting politics. 'If Britain were to field a Team GB football team at the Olympics, it might jeopardise the ability of the individual nations to enter FIFA and UEFA tournaments.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC), which governs the Olympics, does not recognise the individual independent countries and all British athletes compete together under the Team GB umbrella.

But at tournaments like the World Cup and the European Championship, all the British teams compete as their separate nations, under UEFA and FIFA rules.'

I also messaged my sons and grandson, all avid football supporters. This is part of the reply I got from youngest son..'It's not even as important to me as the FA Cup.' Eldest son said similar. Haven't heard back from grandson, apparently he's on a day out with his mates. ;)

The best way to view the Olympics in the states is to subscribed to the Peacock streaming service. I do not subscribe to this service as I found my needs are not met by it and to me it isn’t worth the money. So, I watch the summary in the evenings which is OK. The coverage is all very mediocre in my opinion, so I watch it will doing something else. Sometimes I turn down the volume to zero and if something on the screen looks interesting, then I turn the volume up.
