The UK leaves the EU today!

I guess I just do not understand the whole Brexit thing/advantage of it [if there is one? I guess I subscribe to the old adage.....united we stand....etc.

I just hope for all involved, things go well, for a life time.

We are United...we're the United Kingdom ... Not and never were the United states of Europe...

...and that's my last word on the subject!! (y)

I'm not English, so it doesn't concern me, but my main problem with England being part of the EU is that the countries that are solvent have to carry the burdens of those countries that are fiscally irresponsible, such as Greece (bailed many times) and Italy and Purtugal and Spain were/are on the brink of insolvency. The last I heard, they haven't been on the news for quite a while. England is best off doing their own thing.

You can always contact them privately with a PM and ask their opinion and/or ask what forum they frequent for politics.

The problem with that logic, Catlady, is that you think we in the U.S. are independent of other countries and their decisions. Remember "No man is an island?" But mainly what's wrong with it is that we could do the same thing in this country. What if the more affluent states just decided to drop the poorer ones, because they don't want to carry them as "burdens?"

I've had that opinion since day 1, but not being Brit, my opinion doesn't really count. My understanding is that not much changes for this first year allowing for the many aspects of the leave to be dealt with. I've been following Brexit since the beginning. I was in Cornwall when the vote was taken and I never thought it would pass.

Once Brexit starts to bite and the farmers in the north of this essentially rural island see how much more prosperous their southern counterparts are they will want to join them.

At least one pundit has suggested five years.

As for Scotland we shall have to wait and see. To me the recent general election result is a clear indication of a swing towards independence, and it will be interesting to see if the Scottish parliamentary election next year confirms that.
 
Since there is no guarantee that an independent Scotland could immediately join the EU, it could be left in limbo with neither the support of the EU or the UK. It has also been suggested that an independent Scotland would add impetus to the Catalan and Basque independence movements and as such would not be unanimously welcomed in Europe.

You obviously missed today's comment by Donald Tusk, already condemned by the UK government, that the EU would be "enthusiastic" about Scotland joining!

"Despite his claims of countries welcoming Scotland in, Mr Tusk said there would still be a process of application for any country to re-enter the EU."

He said: “If something like, for example, the independence of Scotland happens, then we need a regular process.

“It would be a new process.”

Speaking on the same show, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab suggested other EU countries dealing with independence movements could be against the inclusion of Scotland in the EU.

He said: “Given the secessionist, separatist tendencies in Spain, in France, in Italy, I’m not sure European leaders, let alone here in the UK, would actually welcome that kind of language.”

Hmmmmm. If so, the one in the White House would not be there. Not giving an opinion, just stating a fact.
 
I'd like to go back to the UK one more time before I, well, you know. Ireland and Scotland in particular. Certainly hope the UK stays "U".
