I have so many questions about this. When I was growing up Christine Jorgensen was the only trans person I had ever heard of. I'm sure there were more young people who felt wrong about their bodies than the rest of us were aware of, but why so very many more now? Is it all just from the hormones in the food?
Why did we almost never hear of children or teens killing themselves then, if they would do it now without the operation?
Why do some doctors think it's important to do the operation before puberty? I'm guessing that going from male to female early would be desirable because it would stop the formation of heavy brow ridges (for example) and the thickened larynx that would make her voice deep. Going from female to male they would want the male hormones to deepen the voice and make longer bones and muscle.
Thinking about those medical aspects, and I'm sure there are many more, I do see that the results would be better if started earlier. But still there's the fear of making permanent changes that the person may regret after reaching mental maturity.
