Bill Maher's opinion on Trans kids

I have so many questions about this. When I was growing up Christine Jorgensen was the only trans person I had ever heard of. I'm sure there were more young people who felt wrong about their bodies than the rest of us were aware of, but why so very many more now? Is it all just from the hormones in the food?

Why did we almost never hear of children or teens killing themselves then, if they would do it now without the operation?

Why do some doctors think it's important to do the operation before puberty? I'm guessing that going from male to female early would be desirable because it would stop the formation of heavy brow ridges (for example) and the thickened larynx that would make her voice deep. Going from female to male they would want the male hormones to deepen the voice and make longer bones and muscle.

Thinking about those medical aspects, and I'm sure there are many more, I do see that the results would be better if started earlier. But still there's the fear of making permanent changes that the person may regret after reaching mental maturity.

"They" is a plural pronoun. Unless a trans person has morphed into several people, it makes no sense at all and confuses the language to the point where it's impossible to have a sane conversation about someone (someones?) without using singular pronouns.

Example: "My neighbor's daughter just graduated from college. The neighbor is very proud of them. They are coming to visit her next week. They are staying in her guest room. No, her guest room is only big enough for one person. Why do you ask?"

If "he" and "she" are so offensive, and we are supposed to be engaged in an effort to wipe out any concept of binary genders, making everyone some neutral "thing," then a new pronoun has to be invented. "It" comes across as insulting, so the pronoun would have to be something else.
I did a bit of research (https://uwm.edu/lgbtrc/support/gender-pronouns/) and found this to be my personal favorite:
ey (he/she)em (him/her)eir (his/her)eirs (his/hers/theirs)eirself (himself/herself/themself(s)
Then again, that would take a lot of practice. So, I'll try proper names: "My neighbor's child, Rose, just graduated from college. The neighbor is very proud of Rose. Rose is coming to visit my neighbor next week. Rose is staying in my neighbor's guest room." Phew - that seems less awkward!

My granddaughter had several friends over and I had difficulty deciding the gender of one of them. My granddaughter explained that the person in question was undergoing treatments to transition and that I should just use the preferred proper name. I believe the child was 16 or 17 at the time. I saw this person later and the transition appeared to be successful. Same person, just different packaging.

I once attended a funeral of a neighbor who apparently was a member of the Unitarian Church, which is known to be very liberal and very supportive of gay rights. The service was conducted by a member of the clergy whom it was impossible to identify by gender. I was there with a friend, and she thought he/she was one gender, I thought the other. The name was very unusual and told us nothing about gender. We hardly noticed anything about the service, because we were so caught up with the clergyperson gender issue!

"Transitioning" was much more unusual then; it was about 10 years ago. Probably there will be more and more gender confusion as this continues. Just part of the world we are living in now. Or maybe not "confusion," maybe the entire concept of gender will disappear.

I totally agree!!..using 'they' for one person is very confusing. I try to be respectful but really think that is just silly...'they' always meant more than one...come up with another term instead of changing current meanings...

'm generally against permanent changes being made to one's body before the age of 18, at minimum.

Does that include tattoos? I think it probably should.
It does. DH & I had very few absolute ground rules for our children, but they included no tattoos or piercings (other than our daughter's ears) for as long as we were financially supporting them or they lived under our roof. All stayed through college and moved out at about age 25. They're in their mid-late thirties now. Not a tattoo or piercing among them other than DD's ears.

We wanted to give them time to let their brains grow in before making permanent changes to their appearance that they might regret later.

I sure hope this catches on. I'd happily adopt it!

That's what I do to be safe. It sounds a little stilted, but it's less confusing than the they-speak. There is a trans person who works at our local Walmart. ( Bill Maher would be surprised what goes on in Ohio.) One of the other employees got called in to the office and almost fired for failing to use the proper pronoun.

I used to particularly like this cashier, but these days I find myself heading to another line for fear I'll accidently say the wrong word and be publicly dressed down for it.

Do you know who complained. It may have been an overly efficious manager that heard it.

When I made a pronoun error, the grandson wasn’t upset. His father & SO snapped at me even though I’d already apologized. We only see them once a year and I’m not anxious for the next visit because of this. The father used to use the wrong pronoun by accident sometimes and he’s around him all the time.

I can’t go along with what is acceptable to everyone else on this forum. I believe that marriage is reserved for a man and a woman. I think anything other than heterosexual behavior is disgusting. When someone brings up the issue about their ‘lover’ and later in the conversation I discover that the two people are of the same sex nauseates me. Just thinking about two men having sex totally pukes me out. So, the obvious question is ‘what about two women having sex?’ I refuse to answer. Yes, I am a dinosaur.

We are still allowed to our opinions, aren’t we?

It seems we all have some opinions that are not popular. At least they don't have a "slap" response here. :)

I'm positive "everyone else on this forum" doesn't find it acceptable either. We represent a diverse mixture of people with diverse attitudes. That's what makes it interesting.

I have also found that some people go along, just to get along. Some people today act like they are ashamed or embarrassed to share their true feelings. Politics are to blame for a lot of what’s wrong with our society. Again, some people are more willing to die than vote for the better person, if he/she is not a member of their party.

“To thine own self be true.” -Polonius- You’ll sleep better at night.

I remember when I was young the word gay referred to having a good time and it has disgusted me that now gay referees to a male sexual identity with another male.
When I played in a band when I was a teen ager we played at a wealthy party in in Silicon Valley. They sad it was "gay" party. I thought that meant "Happy". Wow, it was happy and it was also really weird with homosexuals, and trans people. Not a female in sight. :)

Yes, we are allowed to have opinions but whether we are allowed to express them is another matter. 'Free speech' is limited to those who agree with current policy.

You do you, my friend.

It is a tragic situation to not know what you are. My feeling is young people must not be having operations to change their sex until they are at least 18 yrs.

Yes, that's just him being himself, but is also part of his comedic style, like Lewis Black always being in an 'off-the-rails' angry rage.

Here's Lewis Black being relatively tame:

I love Lewis Black! He is coming to Dallas in early November and I will be booking his show.

And you just continue to be disgusted while you whine like a baby when members in this forum call you out for being a homophobe and you deny it. ;)
You are so crude and rude. I am an honest sincere person. I refuse to be bullied by you I am not a pacifist that sits by and let bullies tell me what to do. There are too many pacifists in the world that let bullies and dictators tell them what to do. You are totally out of control telling lies about me and trying to influence the opinions of others.
