How do you use your potash? Isn't it acidic?
We sprinkle small amounts on the soil work it in. You have to watch the PH level carefully though.
Oak ash when burned has a strong alkaline reaction and therefore, not acidic.
Wood ashes contain all the mineral elements that were in the wood. Potassium, calcium, and magnesium carbonate or oxides are present in comparatively large quantities giving the ashes a strongly alkaline reaction which can neutralize acid soils. However, the value of wood
ashes as a plant food depends mostly on the potassium content which is fairly high in Oak ash.
We use ash both from a fire pit, and some small amounts of potash.
Potash is a little more work.
Mix wood ash well with water in a pot.
Let stand for 12 hours and stir vigorously.
Filter through a coffee filter or bring briefly to the boil to increases the yield.
Boil the filtered clear liquid, stir occasionally until the water has evaporated and only a fine white powder, the potash, remains.

Oh, thank you for the explanation!

Since I can’t find a gardening thread I’ll use this one. Half of our garden is in the ground, and part of it is in pots. We’ve just put an 8 x 16 raised garden plot together made from cedar wood. We got the one with raised sides to help keep the deer out. I’ll show it when it’s filled with dirt.

We have water melons, cantaloupes and a variety of berries too. I’d love to take credit for all this but my husband does most of i

How WONDERFUL! I'm inspired to try to grow some fruits and vegetables next year.

I’m glad my pictures have inspired you.
Most people think you need a garden to grow vegetables but you don’t. All you need is some 5 gallon buckets which you can purchase at a hardware store. With the price of vegetables/ fruit ( produce ) going so high, it saves to grow your own. Plus it’s super fresh. The produce doesn’t have to be shipped half way across the continent to get to your dinner table.

If you need any help just ask.

Something else we've discovered recently... If you plant the leftover core of a head of lettuce, it will root and grow. Same with celery. Both have already started to sprout. To help it get going, we use a touch of root starter.
Same with green onions . We bought green onions, used them in salad and saved the ends. We now have fresh green onions in our garden. We bought a package of lettuce seeds and plant them every 2 weeks. A great savings.

Waiting the 30 minutes required after taking Fossamax. I take it every Wednesday morning with a big glass of water. You can't have anything else for 30 minutes. Two minutes to go! ☕

It's dark and dreary. Our dry spell is definitely over. We get some rain every night now. Heavy rain.
I'm not complaining, but it's humid, so humid!

Son/grandson coming over today, yay! Due to my grandson's busy social schedule! BD parties over the next few Saturdays my son is going to make sure me & the cats are set up by going grocery shopping for us, including toilet paper for me & cat litter for them! Heavy, bulky stuff for me to carry, so son does this major shopping for me.

We will have fun thrown in. We are going bowling which has it's own arcade. Looking forward. My grandson insists I bowl. Oy vay. My highest score bowling is 17. Yes, that's right. However, I bowl like a normal person when it's candlepin, which we foolishly don't have in NYC.

Imagine me sleeping until 7am! I am turning into a slug. We didn't get home from DGS' last night until 10-ish. For me that's the middle of the night.

We had more rain last night. Lots more. And if we're being truthed to instead of lied to, we'll get more later this afternoon and tonight.

I need to get to the bank this morning and am going to stop by the garden center for weed & feed for my "pale" lawn. It's like the heat has taken the color out of the grass. If it looks like we'll really get more rain tonight, I'll spread it before dark so it will get watered in.

Maybe I can actually light a fire under my bony butt today and clean out the lower kitchen cabinets. Maybe.

It's 1.20pm sunny..but can you believe I've woken up with a very painful back?.. I think it was moving that big heavy ceramic plant pot... so I'm kinda at a loss to know what to do with myself today ..feeling tired after a very fitful sleep..

I just want to be able to get on with things.. this is the only thing that annoys me about getting older.. in our youth we could just jump out of bed and know we could tackle anything that came our way .. but now, life has other plans for us sometimes...

Anyway... have a super day everybody...pleased you had a lovely evening out with family @Georgiagranny ...you more than deserved to have it..

I am calling the dentist at 7:30 and setting an appointment to get another tooth pulled. It broke this weekend. Oh well. I am probably going to need dentures sometime soon. I don't think I can afford them. I might just need them all pulled and learn to eat without teeth. I used to do that 71 years ago. I hear it is like riding a bike. You don't forget how to do it.

Hubby didn't sleep well last night.

He spend yesterday afternoon helping his nephew.
Sounds like nephew has some crazy ideas of turning MIL"s garage into day care for seniors.
And father in law's larger garage into a mushroom growing business.

Don't think nephew has looked into the 'red tape' he would have to go through to set up senior care place.

As for the mushrooms,,lot of things to do before getting started.
Thought you had to have a steady supply of rotting horse manure for that.

Never a dull moment,, dog escaped out a slow closing screen door.
Once he checked out the barn & may have been trying to catch a wild turkey,,,,,I caught him.

So quiet in here ,,dog must dreaming of next escape.

Hope every one has a nice day.

Once again, I am sleep deprived. It's going to take 100% effort for me to function today. 😴

We've an appointment with our Attorney this morning. No other plans, except (maybe) stopping at our favorite restaurant on the way home. The excuse (not that we need one!) is Dio's birthday. I guess it depends on how long our appointment is, and how feel at the time.

Time for me to make breakfast.

to everyone!

Well, guess what I've been doing for the last 2 hours ?... yep the painting..you guessed it. Actually my back eased up as I worked so I just made sure I didn't do any bending.. and I carried on painting the fence panels. I got 2 more done.. they're 6 feet by 6.... .. and they have trellises on top of them making them 7 feet high.. so I removed all the trellises.. and went to get the Workmate from behind the barn to lay the Trellis on to make it easier to paint , and it was so rusted up I couldn't open it up.

Instead I had to lean them against the panel that hadn't been done yet.. and painted them standing up

In the meantime I had the laundry on.. and that's just finished and I was going to hang the washing out because it was sunny... but I had to stop the painting because it started to rain a little bit ... so the washing can't go out yet... and the last 2 panels can be finished...

I've been to the bank and to the garden center. I didn't paint a fence, though. @hollydolly sometimes what's needed for stiff/sore muscles is using them a little so that you don't start to "favor" them and make them worse. Good move to avoid bending.

DGD made muffins so I'm gonna brew a cup of coffee and take a break because...wait for it...I've cleaned under the kitchen sink and cleaned the corner cabinet. Found things that I didn't remember that I had and obviously haven't needed in the past 15 years. They're in the trash already because there isn't anything worth donating to Goodwill. What's left is three drawers alongside the stove. It could be interesting.

Yeah, the rain is getting a bit annoying but I just don't want to complain since I whined for it! 😏
GG are you possibly enjoying this retirement? I think you're enjoying it. Does anyone else think GG is enjoying it?! 😋

Hard to participate here due to internet issues.

Still smokey, still fire fairly close. To some extent, everything is taking backseat to trying to keep up with wildfire updates. But had a productive morning... on the phone with some neighbors to learn what they're planning, re potential evacuation, cleaned up the kitchen, helped DW assessing all her crates in her studio containing her artwork (in case we'd best truck them to storage). Rototilled in the larger garden, watered dry areas.

Answered a Conversation, here on SF, that had lapsed due to intermittent internet connection.

I finished and found things that I've been looking for...like the snap-on lid for Maggiecat's wet food can, a melon baller, a lemon zester...

@Jules, no thanks to your reminder, the fridge is next ;). Maybe tomorrow or Friday.

I'm feeling accomplished because when all the cabinets/drawers were done, I vacuumed The Hovel. Do I get a prize or a blue ribbon or something?

@hearlady I'm not going to complain (much) about the rain, either. Maybe next week, though. There was such a deluge in our county last night that it flooded a whole cul-de-sac neighborhood clear up to the ceilings of their first floors! It took the fire department with rafts to rescue the residents, and they've been warned that it will probably happen again today/tonight.

It looked like there was rain coming again about an hour ago so I put aside my cleaning exercise for five minutes, ran out and mowed what's left of the lawn while dodging a couple of light raindrops. Rain is supposed to come back in about two hours. I'm going to spread the weed & feed before it starts up again. As much rain as we've had in the past few days, it'll probably already be knee-high in the morning. LOL

Ok...it's now 9.15pm it's just beginning to get dark, and all the fences are painted...wooohooo..:giggle:

the rain didn't come to anything so I put the washing out on the line.. and carried on with the painting.. I just kept going because I don't like things to drag out, I'm just as likely to abandon things if they take too long to do.. so I knew I had to keep going and I did.. and it's all looking Beeeoootifull..

I've just got to put the hanging plant pots back up on the fence when they are thoroughly dry......and paint just one last trellis which I'd taken down , but it started to rain again so I thought, I'll leave that trellis until tomorrow, and then put the planters plus 3 sparkling new white plant pots up on the fences..

Thank God that job is over.. I really hate it.. so I'm delighted it's finished...

Great work Holly, now do you wanna work in my yard? I
have suckers growing on about 6 big trees that need to be
cut off and removed.....course I cannot do that anymore...just
now cut toenails and got one toe bleeding LOL....do not trust
me with sharp instruments LOL!!!!
