Shortages

The recession, depression, bidienism, what ever this is has been tuff on me. Every morning for the past fifty or so years I have had a Milky Way bar with my coffee. Being cheap I will pick them up from Sams in a big box, this past month they were out …shortages…so I had to suffer with Three Musketeers, yesterday we were back at the store and still no Milky Ways…shortages…this month I will have to suffer through with Snickers. Life s so hard.

I like eating cottage cheese and applesauce in the morning. Last week my grocer was out of the store brand of applesauce. I asked the stock guy if they had any that wasn’t put out. He said a lot of processed foods are very slow coming in. With a smile, I said it’s applesauce, not some exotic food. Who doesn’t have applesauce? I wasn’t upset, just trying to make an anecdotal point. He smiled and said he understood.

I like applesauce (unsweetened) and graham crackers for a snack. My store has been consistently out of both.

Well, that sucks; a Three Musketeers is a poor substitute for a Milk Way. (Though I have to admit I'd take the Snickers first; personal prefs.)

None of the low priced Great Value peanut butter at Walmart yesterday, they are frequently out.

Big disappointment to the dog...
With Jiff off the market, it's putting pressure on the rest of the companies, and they are probably geared up to make no more than the amount they can ordinarily sell. I've noticed that crunchy Peter Pan and Skippy aren't always available. I wonder if Jiff is coming back. At first they promised they would, but I haven't seen anything lately that talks about a comeback. A salmonella scandal can put a company out of business. But Jiff is just a small part of a much bigger business. It's still my favorite.

My market had a few new jars of Jif last week. Its coming back.

Oh dear, I don't know what the world is coming to. Sometimes I can't get my favourite brand of Mayo, and getting decent egg based lasagne is well nigh impossible. Given the conditions that a lot of people live under, I don't think we have too much to grumble about.
(I wish I could get Maggi stock cubes here)
I don't think any of us are comparing current shortages to third world living conditions. It's merely a conversation comparing minor inconveniences resulting from --well, I'm not actually sure anymore. The point is, no one is whining, just talking.

I do think climate is playing a large role in shortages. Certain crops are failing because of terrible climate conditions, which will cause those kind of shortages. Also, grocery stores are competing for foods that are popular. It is a supply and demand thing. It is also so trendy now. Toilet paper, baby food, corn, whatever the trend might be to gobble up the supply. The stores are watching this stuff with fine "new" technology and gleaning millions of 1/4 cent transactions from millions of customers. They put out what is trending. They raise prices willy nilly. We know inflation is a problem, but the inconsistencies at each store is bewildering.

When we could no longer get Jif I tried Smucker's Natural peanut butter. You have to stir it up and then keep it in the refrigerator but there are only two ingredients in it, peanuts and salt. No hydrogenated anything and doesn't seem to be a lot of salt. I think I will continue to use it.
