Why do Men age much better than Women?

Aren't there face creams that reduce aging? My ex wife is Irish and was always worried about her skin aging, so she religiously used some greasy Mary Kay goop on her face every night.

It worked, for her . She is 70 now and looks about 50.
OTOH...I never used a face cream until about 3 or 4 years ago... and only when I remember.. but what I've used for the last 20 years or more is Sun Factor lotion...

An interesting topic, but I think both men and women can age nicely over time
It depends imo on a range of factors, circumstances, health/medical, attention to ones
self, how we eat, exercise, genetics, gosh so much stuff, but which gender ages better,
I have known both men and women who think they have aged not so well, while other
who know or perceive them think they have aged very well, so eyes of the beholder,
as for myself as one example, I think I have aged in an average momentum, not poorly
at all, not excellent, just plain decently nice average :) I am not unhappy with how I
look, in fact I really like how I look and well the end. Time for lunch LOL

Great answer!! I am sure you are lovely.

I know a few guys, some of them younger than I am, who look darn right awful. And I know some women my age who look like they are my older sister from another father. It's just genetics, personal health, personal grooming, and sometimes a bit of work from a doctor.

Personally, I think this a myth propagated by the entertainment industry, especially TV and movies. By now we should realized that these people (who love to point their finger of guilt at everybody else) are among some of the worst people in our society. Just ask any gal who has been asked to 'do the twirl' by some lecherous old jerk.

I agree with most of you here (especially health, lifestyle, genes). I think though, it is difficult to generalize millions of aging men and women with just the two photos of a young girl and old lady (and from what I understand, one of them was touched up). I have seen countless women who look very good as they age, and the same with men. It varies.

Regarding a wrinkled face (applies to both sexes)- the sun plays a major role in destroying collagen in the skin and causing wrinkles. Wrinkles make you look much older than your age.

I have two examples:

1) When I was in my thirties, I attended a lecture by the president of the Dermatological Association. She was in her 50s and looked like she was in her 20s. She said that the sun could damage our skin and the majority of the damage was done between certain hours of the day (12-3pm, if I remember correctly). She told us how to protect our skin, and since then, I have been careful about being out in the sun (sunscreen and time of day). It has helped keep the wrinkles down and I also look younger than my years. I know this because I once volunteered for a P&G Olay product test in my 40s and I was declined because my skin didn't have enough wrinkles! I also put on face cream that has sunscreen in it.

2) During the time I worked in the hospital (30+ years ago), I was asked to be an interpreter for patients who were from Greece. In one case, I interpreted for a woman who looked to be in her seventies, but when I asked her her age, she said she was 43. She had so many wrinkles and looked like a dried prune. She talked about how much she loved the beach and spent a lot of time sunbathing. That's when I made the connection of the sun and the aging skin. I have more stories, but will leave it here.

I disagree with that statement. Reason is that I belong to an exercise class and there are only women there and they are in pretty good shape. Also, I walk 5 days/weeks with some gals and they are in really good shape.

I attended a resident meeting last Tuesday night. They asked 1 man to stand up and introduce himself. He said he couldn't stand up. Another man kept mumbling that he wanted to go back to his room because the Jets (local hockey team) were playing.

If you ask my humble option, around where I live the women are in pretty good shape while the men can hardly make it to the bathroom and keep mumbling about missing their sport channels.

To all the ladies I have known: šŸ‘
To all the men that don't exercise: šŸ‘Ž

At age 77 I look pretty damn old! The women get to use make up. We men don't. I would agree that some male actors continue to look good as they age, but I'm sure there are face lifts and make up involved. I also think that women in general are more concerned about their appearance with age than men are.

From what I see it's not appearance per se, it's confidence in that appearance. Michael Caine is pushing 90, no make up, and definitely no surgeon's knife, yet he looks as he did when he was much younger. I don't mean physically, but that confidence shines through his smile.

I was looking at old TV shows and in almost all of them, the Men look just as handsome older as they looked younger, sadly the women didn't. I wonder why!
@Sassycakes About six years ago I was at the DMV waiting to get my driver's license renewed. I was the only woman in the room. All of the men were in various levels of casual clothing, some sloppy looking, some with ball caps, and most looked haggard, oldish, wrinkled clothes, dressed like teenagers, and just unappealing. But, hey, they weren't dressing for me or looking for judgement from strangers.

I had the sudden and unpleasant thought that is this what middle aged and older men look like? If I was looking for a relationship or more I was not impressed and thought, this is really slim pickings. Some women let their appearances go, not a top priority for many reasons, too. Don't get me wrong.

You said you were watching Old Tv Shows, and I think it depends which shows makes the difference. Way back in the black and white days, men were dressing better if that was the theme of the show.

Watch any Hallmark Movie these days and all the women have perfectly madeup faces, their curl/wave in their hair are always perfectly set, and they never do any thing that would make them sweat.

Until last year or so, no Hallmark movie ever had a hand hold or a kiss between the main characters until the closing scene. All of this and the ridiculous mood music which pops up relentlessly means Hollywood or Canada where most Hallmark movies are filmed, do not live in the real world.

I don't want to judge a book by its cover. Peer pressure to look a certain way and all the Selfies ever taken will not make a bit of difference in the end.

Except for gravity's effects, I think I have aged well on my face. Not being an addict and not overdoing sun exposure helps a lot. I would not get Botox even if offered on a platinum platter.

When I cut down on anything with sugar my face shows the good that I have done. I am thinking about trying a collagen supplement since it would also help with aches and pains. Most days, without trying, the pain burden just shows by looking at my face, no matter how much I try to grin and bear it.

I'd rather Hollywood produced movies and tv shows which included all types of faces- young/old, homely/attractive, and anything else you can think of.

My husband is older than me by years. He looks about 15-20 years younger than men his real age. That youthful appearance is down to me, not letting him give up and staying grumpy. It's actually shocking to see men we know and others on tv who are his exact age and they look sooooo very much older. Now if he would only eat healthier.

The OP's conclusion doesn't follow from research evidence although women do age slower than males in some facets. The below summarizes differences:

https://www.verywellhealth.com/is-aging-different-for-men-and-women-2224332

Below is a more important biological facet bearing on aging. None of my 5 brothers or sister aged slowly as I did so just not DNA. I suspect this lucky person has had long telomeres though have not been actually tested.

https://www.verywellhealth.com/telomere-shortening-the-secret-to-aging-2224346

The discovery of telomeres completely changed the way researchers study longevity and the process of aging. In fact, the researchers who discovered telomeres won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2009.1 Telomeres are bits of "junk DNA" that are located at the ends of chromosomes. They protect your real DNA every time a cell divides.

Most cells can replicate approximately 50 times before the telomeres become too short. Some researchers believe that telomeres are the supposed secret to longevity and that there are circumstances in which telomeres will not shorten. For example, cancer cells don't die (which is the main problem) because they activate an enzyme called telomerase that adds on to the telomeres when cells divide. All cells in the body have the capacity to produce telomerase, but only certain cells—including stem cells, sperm cells, and white blood cells need to produce the enzyme. These cells need to replicate more than 50 times within a lifetime, so by producing telomerase they aren't affected by telomere shortening.

Shorter telomeres are not only associated with age but with disease too. In fact, shorter telomere length and low telomerase activity are linked to several chronic preventable diseases. These include hypertension, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, depression, osteoporosis, and obesity.

Well, my grandkids thought I was older than my husband because I have white hair and he still has greying black.
Ouch!
I left it alone since I could see he was enjoying himself.
Besides, I'm superior in every other way! 😁

I think that perhaps the prevalence of Hallmark movies made in Canada has more to with other considerations, primarily financial, than the likelihood of Canadians not living in the real world. By and large, we are an educated, practical, tolerant, well informed people, comfortable living in a multicultural environment.
